No fewer than 1,300 students of Epe origin in Lagos State have benefited from scholarship awards offered by the prestigious Epe Club in the last 42 years.
The president of the Club, Chief Lanre Rasak revealed this at the 2016 Presidential Ileya get-together investiture of the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode as the Life Patron of the indigenous body.
Rasak emphasised that since 1974 when the club came into existence, the scholarship idea was conceived to address the educational deficit the Epe division of Lagos was experiencing at the time.
He added that the scholarship has been directed towards tertiary education of the beneficiaries, noting that the gesture would continue while the number would be increased from time to time.
“We started with 20, we are hoping to increase the number to 50, 60 and so on annually,” he stated.
He stressed that unlike some indigenous organisations being used to fan embers of disunity, the club has enhanced the educational status of the Epe division and fostered unity among the descendants.
“Epe division before now, had the problem of ethnic nationality between the Eko-Epe and the Ijebu-Epe, so we thought of a platform to unify all the nationalities, where we could exhibit genuine love towards one another and discuss common issues that affect us, this led to the existence of the club,” he said.
