Main Story

Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano will host the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, with Bayern Munich’s home ground and Barcelona’s Camp Nou set to stage the competition’s showpieces in 2028 and 2029, respectively. The 2026/27 final is scheduled for Saturday, June 5, 2027, and will be the second time the Metropolitano hosts the showpiece, after Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 there in 2019.

The venue was announced on UEFA’s website in September, where Munich and Barcelona were also confirmed as hosts for the subsequent finals. Meanwhile, the 2026/27 Champions League league phase is underway, with match week three of the eight matches taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The stadium has been Atletico Madrid’s home since 2017 and will mark its 10th anniversary in 2027. UEFA says the reconstructed stadium replaced the Vicente Calderón and is named in honour of the original Estadio Metropolitano, Atleti’s home until 1966. It opened on September 16, 2017, when Atleti faced Malaga in La Liga, with Antoine Griezmann scoring the first goal in a 1-0 home win. Located on Avenida Luis Aragonés in north-east Madrid, it has a capacity of around 70,000.

The Issues

The 2027 final will be Madrid’s sixth European Cup or Champions League final. The Santiago Bernabeu previously staged the finals in 1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010, and only London has hosted more. Rotating the final through Madrid, Munich and Barcelona in successive seasons also concentrates the showpiece in three of Europe’s biggest football cities.

The Metropolitano’s credentials extend beyond football. UEFA describes it as the first 100 per cent LED stadium in the world, with solar panels and recycled rainwater used to irrigate the pitch. It has also hosted rugby union matches, the World Rugby Sevens Series Grand Final, boxing events and concerts, and is among the venues shortlisted for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

What’s Being Said

UEFA said the reconstructed stadium replaced the Vicente Calderón as home of three time Europa League winners Atletico Madrid, and that it is “named in honour of the original Estadio Metropolitano Atleti’s home until 1966., On the trophy, UEFA noted that it stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. Its creator, Jürg Stadelmann, said: “Everybody in football is keen to get their hands on it.”

For the later finals, UEFA said Munich’s arena previously hosted the final in 2012 and 2025, along with six matches at Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League final. Camp Nou will stage its third final in 2029, after Milan beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in 1989 and Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in 1999.

What’s Next

The league phase continues this week with match week three, before the competition builds toward the June 5, 2027 final in Madrid. The Metropolitano will then mark its 10th anniversary in the same year, The winners will earn a place in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup against the Europa League winners, and an automatic place in the league phase of the 2027/28 Champions League if they have not qualified through their domestic competition. Munich follows in 2028 and Barcelona in 2029.

Bottom Line

Madrid will stage the 2027 Champions League final at the Metropolitano, starting a three-year run of finals through Madrid, Munich and Barcelona, with Atletico’s stadium getting a second showpiece just as it turns 10.
