When the police officers arrived at the scene of the attack, the mob had already fled, according to Rufai.

He stated that the man, who was found unresponsive, was brought to the hospital for treatment and later confirmed dead.

“On 25th June 2023 at about 0955hrs, a distress call was received at about 0920hrs that one Usman Buda ‘M’ of Gwandu LGA a butcher at Sokoto Abbatoir allegedly blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad,” the statement reads.

“As a result, he was mobbed and attacked by some Muslim faithful who inflicted serious injuries on him.

“Upon receiving the information, the commissioner of police, area commander metro and dpo Kwanni led a team of policemen and all other operational commanders to the scene.

“On arrival, the mob escaped the scene and left the victim unconscious; where he was rescued and taken to Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto (UDUTH) for treatment and was later confirmed dead at the said Hospital.”

According to Rufai, the area has been calmed down, and the police have initiated an inquiry into the event.

BizWatch Nigeria recalls that this is not the first incident happening in Sokoto.

In May, 2022 a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto was killed by some muslims for allegedly blasphemy.

Deborah, the student, was allegedly attacked by an enraged mob after making words deemed insulting to Prophet Mohammed.

The trouble allegedly began when the lady was asked by her coworkers how she managed to pass her tests.

The late student, who was thought to be a Christian, was said to have credited her academic success to Jesus.

It was gathered that the mob was irritated by her response and was asked to remove the comments, which she rejected.

According to a report seen, this prompted the mob to attack her and then set fire to her body.

“She was having an argument with some of her schoolmates over their ongoing examination and when she was asked how she managed to pass her exams, she said it was Jesus.

“She was asked to withdraw the statement and apologise which she refused.

“The school security intervened, and took her to their post but they were overpowered by students after which she was killed in the process. After killing her, her body was burnt on the school premises.”
