The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to power distribution companies (Discos) that refuse to accept electricity allocated to them by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The government has declared that such actions will be met with severe consequences going forward.
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, made this declaration during a meeting with heads of agencies under his ministry in Abuja on Monday. He revealed that the government is planning to increase power generation and supply to between 6,000 and 6,500 megawatts in the next three to six months.
Adelabu emphasized that the current state of power supply in the country is unacceptable, noting a recent decline in power availability. He pointed out that power distribution companies failing to provide consistent electricity to Nigerians could face license revocation.
“We must address the issues of distribution, and I’ve said before now that the non-performance of Discos in terms of epileptic power supply qualifies as a basis for the revocation of license,” Adelabu stated.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between government agencies and urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to establish performance measurement standards for Discos. Adelabu emphasized the need for strict enforcement to hold Discos accountable for their actions.
Adelabu also addressed plans to improve power generation, expressing confidence in reaching a minimum of 6,000 megawatts within the specified timeframe. He highlighted the significance of stable gas supply for achieving this target and called for increased collaboration between stakeholders in the power sector to enhance electricity distribution nationwide.
