The Minister of Health, Professor Issac Adewole has reassured the Management of The University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom of the Federal Government’s commitment to its overall development.

Prof. Adewole explained that the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari’s watch would ensure full implementation of this year’s budget to achieve sustainable healthcare of the people.

“If citizens are a country’s principal asset then their health status defines the course of development, and their health characteristics determine the nature and direction of  human development.” Adewole stated.

He appealed to  the  management of the Teaching Hospital to prioritize its needs according to budgetary allocation, explaining that the Federal Government has begun to discourage overseas medical trips by public servants to conserve funds.

“This year’s Federal Government budget is tight, but I promised to inaugurate the General Outpatients Building within the year so as to give the hospital enough space for Accident and Emergency Unit.”

He thanked the State Government for announcing the release of N100 million for the completion of the General Outpatients Building of the Hospital and commended the state Commissioner for assisting the hospital.

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Professor Etete Peters told the Minister that lack of fund had made it difficult for the Hospital to recruit staff members approved by the Federal Government in spite of waivers granted to employ staff of various cadres mostly nurses and resident doctors.
