Elton John has candidly revealed how he prayed to see his sons again after a major infection left him fighting for his life.
The music icon was forced to take time out after contracting a serious infection during his tour of South America.
Writing in his memoirs, Elton, 72, said: “The doctors told David [Furnish] I was 24 hours away from death.
“If the South American tour had gone on for another day that would have been it: brown bread.”
He spent 11 days hospitalised before being allowed home to recover for a further seven weeks.
In extracts published by The Daily Mail, Elton continued: “I was incredibly lucky – although, I have to say, I didn’t feel terribly lucky at the time.
“I lay awake all night, wondering if I was going to die.
“In the hospital, alone at the dead of night, I’d prayed: Please don’t let me die, please let me see my kids again, please give me a little longer.”
The infection occurred after Elton had surgery following a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
The British legend opted for surgery over radiation and chemotherapy as it would have meant a series of trip to the hospital and he was on a world tour.
Speaking at Twickenham stadium in June 2017 at his first show since his heath woes, Elton said: “It’s good to be back in Twickenham.
“Thank you for coming out.
“At one point it was touch and go as to if I’d even be here.”
Later on in the show Eton was joined by his two sons Zachery and Elijah.
The Rocketman singer is currently on his farewell tour. The mammoth global trek is set to continue until the end of 2020.
