The Nigerian Navy has inaugurated a rural electrification project in Ikot Edeghe community, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, to restore electricity and improve socio-economic activities in the area.
The project, comprising a 5,000 KVA electricity transformer, was commissioned under the Chief of Naval Staff’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Project (SIQIP) scheme.
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, represented by the Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Adm. Chijioke Onyemaobi, said access to electricity remained critical to national development because of its role in education, commerce and security.
He said restoring power to the community would improve residents’ quality of life by supporting learning, stimulating economic activities, enhancing security and creating opportunities for growth.
Abbas said the Navy remained committed to strengthening civil-military relations through community development initiatives that address critical needs while promoting national cohesion.
He commended the project facilitator, Rear Adm. Etop Ebe, Director of Maritime Bureau, for identifying the community’s electricity challenge and successfully implementing the intervention under the SIQIP programme.
Abbas urged residents to safeguard and maintain the facility to ensure its long-term sustainability.
Speaking earlier, Ebe said the project reflected the Navy’s commitment to supporting national development through sustainable community-focused initiatives.
He explained that Ikot Edeghe had been without electricity for almost 10 years due to vandalism, theft and the deterioration of power infrastructure, a situation that had negatively affected economic activities and employment opportunities.
According to him, the project was conceived in February and completed within four months.
