The governor-elect of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Femi Hamzat were presented their Certificates of Return by the National Commissioner in charge of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola in Lagos yesterday.

At a ceremony witnessed by top All Progressives Congress (APC) party men and state government officials, the state’s INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Sam Olumekun said that there were 45 candidates in the race for the governorship, and that with election of Sanwo-Olu, the people of Lagos State have spoken loudly and that all that was left is for the governor-elect to live up to the expectations of the people.

“Lagosians have spoken, Your Excellency, and I dare say that they have spoken loudly and without equivocation. Therefore, the journey to a better Lagos is laid squarely in your court. May God Almighty be your lone-star in this journey.”

Olumekun said that unlike the presidential election which witnessed some skirmishes and violence in the state, the governorship election was crisis free and peaceful.

He, therefore, told Sanwo-Olu that “although the presidential election in Lagos State like in some states across the federation witnessed some pockets of violence, we are grateful to God in Lagos that the governorship election that produced you was free of rancor and it was adjudged credible, smooth, peaceful, free and fair by the international community.”

He thereafter praised security agencies under the Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, the NYSC and the Central Bank of Nigeria for ensuring that election was successful.

Soon after the presentation, the governor-elect thanked the INEC for a tremendous job in the conduct of the election. He told Lagosians that he would not misuse the opportunity given to him and never abuse the confidence reposed in him and his deputy.

He promised to run an inclusive government that will take everyone along in order to make Lagos greater.
