President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to work with other relevant stakeholders to address some of the issues that have affected the quality of engineering graduates and services in Nigeria.
At the opening ceremony of the 25th Engineering Assembly, an annual meeting for COREN, he noted that there was urgent need to improve the engineering technologies to enhance the capacity of local manufacturing industries, power supply and other aspects of infrastructure in the country.
“We may not be able to take advantage of new engineering technologies if we fail to churn out quality and world grade engineers from our universities-of necessity, the quality of learning and practice of engineering in Nigeria must be improved upon.
“It is imperative for COREN to work with other relevant stakeholders to address some of the issues that have affected the quality of engineering graduates and services in Nigeria,” he said.
The title for this year is “Embracing the Future: Improving the Quality of Engineering Educaction and practice in Nigeria.
According to him, this can be handled through review and update of engineering curriculum in schools as well as promotion of exchange programmes within global academic institutions and professional engineering bodies.
The President of COREN, Engr Kashim A. Ali, expressed hope that, with the expected harmonisation of engineering qualifications and international mutual recognition agreements, the standard of engineering practice will be raised.
