“States Still Owe Workers’ Salaries Despite Bailout Package” – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said twenty four states are still finding it difficult to pay salaries despite the bailout funds released in 2015 .

The president stated this in a meeting with the 36 state governors who came to seek for more bailout package from the central government.

He said he was “very disturbed” by the hardship state government workers and their families were facing due to the non-payment of salaries.

Buhari last week approved a one-month moratorium on deductions for debtor-states.

The governors presented a request for an 18-month moratorium on deductions from debtor-states’ allocations from the federation allocation.

They also handed the president a “Fiscal Restructuring Plan” for him to implement in order to get them out of the bind.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, who announced this in a statement, said

Buhari had assured the governors that he would establish an inter-ministerial committee to study the plan.

He said the committee’s recommendations would be tabled before the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.
