University Don Raises Alarm Over Illegal Mining

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger state, Professor, has raised the alarm that illegal mining is thriving at the fringes of the institution in the Gidan-Kwanu area of the Niger state capital.

He said the illegal miners were always on ‘duty ‘ between the hours of 2am and 6am daily in a bid to avoid security operatives and officials of governments.

Akanji raised the alarm in Minna on Wednesday when he spoke on “Platform”, a personality interview forum of the Niger state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ).

Apart from serving as security risks to staff and students, the Vice Chancellor said that the activities of the illegal miners were denying the country of the much-needed internal revenue, especially now that the nation is hard pressed for money.

Akanji said a series of reports had been made to the relevant security agencies in the state, but  lamented that as soon as illegal miners were raided, they returned to the illegal trade.
