Editorial Policy, Guidelines & Disclaimers
Our commitment to accuracy, fairness, transparency, and the highest standards of business journalism in Nigeria.
EFFECTIVE: JANUARY 2026 | EST. 2014
Section 01
Our Editorial Mission
BizWatchNigeria.Ng exists to serve as Nigeria’s most reliable sector-based platform for business intelligence, news, and analysis. Established in 2014 and managed by Bizwatch Nigeria Limited, our mission is to empower entrepreneurs, executives, investors, policymakers, and market participants with accurate, timely, and actionable information.
We believe that access to credible business information is a catalyst for economic growth. Everything we publish is guided by that conviction. We hold ourselves to the standard of providing news and intelligence that our readers can trust, act upon, and share with confidence.
“Our editorial compass is defined by three principles: accuracy before speed, fairness before favour, and the public interest before commercial interest.”
Section 02
Editorial Standards & Core Values
All content published on BizWatchNigeria.Ng — regardless of format or author — must uphold the following core standards:
Accuracy
We do not publish information we cannot verify. All factual claims must be supported by at least one credible, identifiable source. Where a claim cannot be independently verified, it must be clearly attributed and caveated. Statistics, data, and figures must reference their origin.
Fairness & Balance
Stories involving allegations, controversies, or disputes must make reasonable effort to present all relevant sides. Individuals or organisations named in a critical context must be given an opportunity to respond prior to publication, and any response received must be included or summarised in the article.
Independence
Editorial decisions at BizWatchNigeria.Ng are made independently of advertising, commercial, or political pressures. No advertiser, partner, or sponsor has any influence over our editorial content. The Editor-in-Chief holds final authority over all editorial decisions.
Transparency
We clearly label all content types so readers always know what they are reading. News reports, opinion pieces, sponsored content, press releases, and paid partnerships are each distinctly identified. We do not disguise advertising as editorial content.
Accountability
We take responsibility for what we publish. Errors are corrected promptly and transparently. We do not silently alter published content — all significant post-publication changes are noted at the top of the article.
Section 03
News Reporting Policy
Original news content on BizWatchNigeria.Ng adheres to the principles of professional journalism practice.
Source Requirements
Reporters and contributors must cite named, identifiable sources wherever possible. Anonymous sources may only be used when the information is of significant public interest and the source’s identity cannot be disclosed without placing them at risk. In such cases, the reason for anonymity must be explained to the Editor-in-Chief and, where possible, acknowledged in the article.
Plagiarism & Attribution
All content must be original. Where information is drawn from other publications, wire services, or reports, it must be clearly attributed with a link or citation. The wholesale reproduction of another outlet’s article, even with attribution, is not permitted.
Conflict of Interest
Journalists and contributors must disclose any personal, financial, or professional interest in a story they are covering. The Editor-in-Chief will assess whether such interest constitutes a conflict and may reassign the story accordingly.
Headlines & Social Media Framing
Headlines must accurately reflect article content. Sensationalist, misleading, or clickbait headlines are not permitted. The same standard applies to social media posts promoting our content.
Section 04
Opinion & Analysis Content
BizWatchNigeria.Ng publishes opinion and analysis pieces as a platform for informed perspectives on business, economic policy, and sector trends. These pieces do not represent the views of BizWatchNigeria.Ng or Bizwatch Nigeria Limited and are always clearly labelled as opinion.
Standards for Opinion Pieces
- All opinion articles must be clearly labelledOpinionorAnalysisat the top of the article.
- Authors must identify themselves with their full name, title, and professional affiliation.
- Opinions must be based on verifiable facts — factual claims within opinion pieces remain subject to our accuracy standards.
- Personal attacks, defamatory statements, or unsubstantiated allegations against named individuals are not permitted, even in opinion format.
- Authors must disclose any financial interest or professional relationship relevant to the subject of their piece.
- Analysis pieces that include data, projections, or statistics must cite their sources.
What We Will Not Publish
- Opinions that constitute defamation, libel, or incitement.
- Content that promotes ethnically or politically divisive agendas under the guise of business commentary.
- Undisclosed advertorial content presented as independent opinion.
- Pieces that are factually inaccurate without acknowledging contested claims.
Section 05
Guest Authors & Contributor Guidelines
We welcome contributions from business leaders, economists, industry professionals, academics, policy analysts, and subject matter experts. Guest authorship is an editorial, not a commercial, arrangement — payment does not guarantee publication.
Eligibility
Contributors should demonstrate relevant expertise in the subject they write about. BizWatchNigeria.Ng reserves the right to verify a contributor’s credentials before publication. We do not publish anonymous guest contributions.
Submission Requirements
- Submissions should be between 600 and 1,500 words unless otherwise agreed with our editorial team.
- Content must be original and not published or pending publication elsewhere.
- Contributors must submit a short bio (50–80 words) and a professional headshot.
- All factual claims must include sources, data references, or links.
- Submissions must be made in Word format or Google Docs to the editorial team ateditorial@bizwatchnigeria.ng.
Editorial Rights
BizWatchNigeria.Ng reserves the right to edit submissions for clarity, length, tone, and compliance with our editorial standards. Significant edits will be shared with the contributor prior to publication. We also reserve the right to decline any submission without obligation to provide a reason.
Contributor Disclosure
Guest contributors must disclose any financial relationships, affiliations, or conflicts of interest relevant to the subject of their contribution. Failure to disclose material conflicts may result in retraction of the published piece and exclusion from future contributions.
Important: Submitting content to BizWatchNigeria.Ng grants us a non-exclusive licence to publish, edit, and archive the piece on our platform. Contributors retain copyright over their work.
Section 06
Press Release Policy
BizWatchNigeria.Ng receives and publishes press releases from companies, government agencies, NGOs, and individuals as a service to our readers and the business community.
Labelling
All press releases are clearly labelled Press Release and are not represented as original editorial reporting. Readers understand that press releases represent the views and claims of the issuing organisation, not of BizWatchNigeria.Ng.
Standards for Publication
- Press releases must be relevant to business, finance, industry, or economic affairs in Nigeria or the broader African market.
- We do not publish press releases that contain unsubstantiated defamatory claims against third parties.
- Releases that are political campaign material or partisan in nature will not be published.
- We reserve the right to edit press releases for length and house style without altering material meaning. We will notify the issuing party if significant edits are made.
- All press releases must include a verifiable contact name and address for the issuing organisation.
Press releases may be submitted to newsdesk@bizwatchnigeria.ng.
Section 07
Sponsored Content & Commercial Partnerships
BizWatchNigeria.Ng accepts sponsored content, native advertising, and commercial partnerships as part of our business model. We are committed to ensuring that commercial content never compromises the integrity of our editorial environment.
Disclosure & Labelling
All sponsored content is prominently labelled Sponsored or Paid Partnership at the top of the content. This labelling is non-negotiable. Commercial content will never be presented to resemble editorial reporting.
Editorial Firewall
Sponsors and advertisers have no influence over our editorial decisions, story selection, or coverage. A commercial relationship with BizWatchNigeria.Ng does not guarantee positive editorial coverage, nor does the absence of a commercial relationship result in negative coverage.
Content Standards
- Sponsored content must meet our basic accuracy and decency standards.
- We will not publish sponsored content that is misleading, defamatory, or that makes false claims about competitors.
- Sponsored content promoting financial products, investment schemes, or health claims must comply with applicable Nigerian regulatory standards.
- BizWatchNigeria.Ng reserves the right to decline or retract sponsored content that conflicts with our editorial values.
For advertising and partnership enquiries, contact adverts@bizwatchnigeria.ng.
Section 08
Interview Policy
Interviews published on BizWatchNigeria.Ng feature business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, economists, and other subject matter experts. Our interviews aim to generate insight and knowledge for our readership, not to serve as platforms for uncontested promotion.
Standards
- Interview questions must seek to generate substantive insight, not merely promotional content for the interviewee.
- Interviewees may review a transcript for factual accuracy prior to publication but may not alter the substance of their answers or add new responses without disclosure.
- Any material provided by an interviewee’s PR team in lieu of direct responses must be clearly noted in the published piece.
- Where an interviewee makes significant factual claims, our editorial team will make reasonable effort to verify those claims independently.
On-the-Record vs Off-the-Record
All interviews are considered on-the-record unless an off-the-record agreement is explicitly established before the interview begins. Information offered off-the-record will not be published without the interviewee’s subsequent consent. “Background only” information may inform our reporting without attribution.
Section 09
Video Content Policy
Video content produced or hosted by BizWatchNigeria.Ng — including interviews, panel discussions, explainers, and market updates — is subject to the same editorial standards as our written content.
Standards
- Video content featuring news or analysis must be editorially independent and clearly sourced.
- Sponsored video content must be clearly labelledSponsoredat the beginning of the video and in all accompanying text.
- Video interviews follow our standard interview policy, including the right of interviewees to review transcripts for factual accuracy.
- User-generated video content may only be published with the verified consent of the creator and must be clearly attributed.
- We do not use deceptively edited footage to misrepresent events or statements.
Section 10
Financial Literacy, Business Intelligence & Market Research Content
BizWatchNigeria.Ng publishes financial literacy content, business intelligence reports, sector analyses, and market research summaries as a public service and value-added offering to our readers. This content is informational in nature.
Important Distinction
Content published under Financial Literacy, Business Intelligence, or Market Research is for informational and educational purposes only. It does not constitute financial advice, investment guidance, or professional consultation. Readers should seek independent professional advice before making financial or business decisions based on our content.
Standards
- All data, statistics, and projections must be sourced and dated. The source and date of underlying data must be visible to the reader.
- Where market research is produced in partnership with a third party, the partnership must be disclosed prominently.
- BizWatchNigeria.Ng does not recommend specific stocks, securities, assets, or investment products in its editorial content.
- Financial literacy content is written for a general audience and must be clearly distinguished from professional financial advice.
- Content that may move markets or influence investment decisions is subject to heightened accuracy review before publication.
Section 11
Corrections, Clarifications & Complaints
BizWatchNigeria.Ng takes errors seriously. We are committed to correcting mistakes quickly, transparently, and without ego.
Our Corrections Policy
- Significant factual errors will be corrected by appending a clearly dated correction notice at the top of the affected article.
- Minor typographical or stylistic errors may be corrected silently, but significant content changes will always be flagged.
- We do not delete articles to avoid accountability. Where an article is retracted, a notice explaining the retraction will remain in its place.
- Social media posts containing factual errors will also be corrected or deleted and replaced with accurate information.
