US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both the Senate and House of Representatives in November’s elections.
Trump announced the proposal on Wednesday at a Republican Party convention in Dallas, describing the payment as a “Trump dividend”.
He said Americans would receive the money if voters kept Republicans in control of both chambers of Congress.
With more than 245 million adults in the US, a payment of $5,000 per person would amount to more than $1 trillion by a rough estimate.
