Main story

TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc has expanded its environmental education and school recycling programme to 14 schools in Lagos as part of efforts to promote climate awareness and responsible waste management among students.

The expansion was announced during activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day at Aje Community Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in Yaba.

Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, Wilfried Konde, said the programme, implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action.

He explained that the initiative, which previously covered 10 schools located around the company’s facilities in Apapa, Surulere and Victoria Island, now includes four additional schools through the donation of recycling bins and environmental awareness activities.

According to Konde, about 500 students have so far benefited from environmental education, recycling facilities and inter-school clean-up campaigns. He added that participating schools collected 12,596 kilogrammes of recyclable waste between December 2024 and June 2026 through collections carried out twice each school term.

He encouraged students to adopt environmentally responsible habits and play an active role in creating cleaner and healthier communities.

Also speaking, the General Manager, Country Services, TotalEnergies Companies in Nigeria, Adesua Adewole, said environmental sustainability remained a core part of the company’s operations and corporate responsibility programmes.

She noted that the company, which is marking 70 years of operations in Nigeria, has consistently supported initiatives that promote environmental protection and sustainable development.

Adewole said the programme combines practical environmental education with improved waste management by providing recycling bins to schools while the Nigerian Conservation Foundation delivers awareness sessions on sustainability.

She added that the latest expansion extends coverage to schools located around the Herbert Macaulay service station and the company’s depot on Burma Road in Apapa.

The Principal of Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, Caroline Awofeso, commended the initiative, saying the recycling bins would improve waste management within the school and contribute to a better learning environment.

The issues

Environmental education is increasingly recognised as an important tool for promoting sustainable behaviour among young people. School-based recycling programmes also help reduce waste while encouraging long-term environmental responsibility.
