Key points
- Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) may introduce a data calculator to help subscribers monitor real-time data consumption.
- The move aims to address persistent complaints of rapid data depletion and improve transparency in the telecoms sector.
- Operators insist that most data usage concerns are linked to device behaviour rather than billing errors.
Main story
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Nigeria are considering the introduction of a data calculator tool that would allow subscribers to track and measure their data usage more precisely amid rising complaints over perceived fast data depletion.
The proposed tool, according to industry indications, would provide users with a clearer breakdown of how their data is consumed daily, moving beyond the existing daily usage reports already mandated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Telecom operators currently send subscribers reports showing the previous day’s data usage as part of regulatory efforts to promote transparency in the sector.
However, industry sources say persistent consumer complaints about rapid data exhaustion have continued to undermine trust between subscribers and service providers.
According to a report by Nairametrics, a senior industry source explained that operators are now exploring more interactive tools to improve transparency and user awareness.
“An average subscriber believes their service provider steals their data once their data is exhausted before time or depletes faster than they expected, which is not true,” the source said.
The source added that operators have repeatedly tried to educate users on the factors responsible for fast data consumption, including smartphone background activity, application updates and device settings.
“We are looking at tools that could show subscribers not just what they have used, but also how they have used it to further promote transparency,” the source added.
Operators are also said to be ramping up sensitisation campaigns to help customers better understand how mobile data is consumed across different applications and devices.
Recall that the NCC had conducted an audit of mobile networks about 24 months ago and found no major evidence of systemic data depletion issues, contrary to widespread public complaints at the time.
The regulator’s findings indicated that user behaviour, smartphone configurations and application usage patterns were the primary drivers of rapid data consumption.
The issues
The recurring dispute over data depletion reflects a broader trust gap between telecom operators and subscribers in Nigeria’s digital economy. While operators cite device behaviour and app usage as key factors, many consumers remain sceptical, pointing to perceived inconsistencies in data consumption patterns.
What’s being said
Industry operators insist that there is no deliberate data theft, attributing complaints to limited consumer awareness of how smartphones and digital applications consume data. They argue that improved transparency tools, including a data calculator, will help bridge the information gap and reduce mistrust.
What’s next
If adopted, the proposed data calculator is expected to be rolled out alongside ongoing subscriber education campaigns. The NCC may also provide regulatory guidance as operators seek to enhance transparency and improve user experience across mobile networks.
Bottom line
As complaints over rapid data depletion persist, telecom operators are turning to technology-driven transparency tools to rebuild consumer trust, with a data calculator emerging as a potential solution to bridge the knowledge gap between providers and subscribers.
