The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared June 28, 2023 to be Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Adha celebrates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isma’il, to show his devotion to God.
The festival is the second most important religious event in Islam, after Eid al-Fitr, which commemorates the conclusion of Ramadan.
The sultan wished Muslims a happy Eid al-Adha in advance, according to a statement issued by the national moonsighting commission on Sunday evening.
“The Sultanate Council Sokoto has declared Monday 19/June/2023 as the first day of Zul-Hijjah 1444 AH. Accordingly, Wednesday 28/June/2023 will be the day of Eidul Adha 1444 AH,” the statement reads.
“His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa‘ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, wishes the entire Muslim Ummah happy Eidul Adha Mubarak in advance.”
During the “festival of sacrifice” known as Eid al-Adha, also known as Sallah, rams are slaughtered.
