Plateau Govt Affirms Lassa Fever Outbreak

Plateau State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kunden Kensha has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

Kensha said 10 suspected cases of the disease were recorded so far  in the state while two of the suspected persons have tested positive to the disease adding that one of them is a student of the University of Jos.

He stated that the state government has risen to the challenge by deploying health workers across the state to sensitise citizens on symptoms and preventive measures of the Lassa fever.

Lassa fever is transmitted through the urine and excrete of a rat that serves as a reservoir for the Lassa virus and this rodent is usually attracted to dirty environment.

“We have commenced aggressive sensitisation and awareness campaign in the state. The campaigns is aimed to enlighten the people on how to prevent the disease and ensure that the menace is nipped in the bud,” he said.

He cautioned citizens of the state to always keep their environment clean and to keep their food safe and away from rodents.

On the recorded cases of polio in the country, the commissioner said the last time Plateau recorded polio was in 2009 and the state government is doing everything possible to sustain it.
