The previous restrictions placed on domiciliary accounts of Nigerian deposit money bank (DMBs) customers have been relaxed as the apex bank issue further updates on foreign exchange (forex) transactions.
Following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new guidelines in the Foreign Exchange (FX) market recently released, the apex bank also announced further policy changes aimed to stabilise pressures in the economy.
According to the Director of Corporate Communications, Dr Isa AbdulMumin, these policy changes is to promote transparency, liquidity, and price discovery in the FX market.
AbdulMumin said this is to improve FX supply, discourage speculation, enhance customer confidence and ensure overall stability in the FX market. He said that in line with deliberations at an extraordinary Bankers’ Committee meeting held on June 16, the CBN provided further guidance to Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) as follows:
“All visible and invisible transactions (medicals, school fees, BTA/PTA, airline, and other remittances) are eligible for the Investors’ and Exporters’ (I & E) window. DMB ensures expeditious processing of all eligible hidden transactions on behalf of its clients using applicable tariffs at the I&E window.
“Ordinary account holders have unrestricted and unrestricted access to the funds in their account. Permanent account holders can make cash deposits up to $10,000 or equivalent per day by wire transfer. It’s allowed,” he said.
A CBN spokesperson said DMB has an obligation to provide benefits to CBN, including the “purpose” of such transactions. He added that as long as the DMB conducts proper Know Your Customer (KYC) due diligence, there will be no restrictions on cash deposits into the home account. “CBN will prioritize the orderly settlement of all FX forwards committed to maturity to further enhance market confidence,” he affirmed.
He added that Apex Bank will continue to engage with stakeholders and issue further guidance as it implements ongoing reforms.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared June 28, 2023 to be Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Adha celebrates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isma’il, to show his devotion to God.
The festival is the second most important religious event in Islam, after Eid al-Fitr, which commemorates the conclusion of Ramadan.
The sultan wished Muslims a happy Eid al-Adha in advance, according to a statement issued by the national moonsighting commission on Sunday evening.
“The Sultanate Council Sokoto has declared Monday 19/June/2023 as the first day of Zul-Hijjah 1444 AH. Accordingly, Wednesday 28/June/2023 will be the day of Eidul Adha 1444 AH,” the statement reads.
“His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa‘ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, wishes the entire Muslim Ummah happy Eidul Adha Mubarak in advance.”
During the “festival of sacrifice” known as Eid al-Adha, also known as Sallah, rams are slaughtered.

“Traffic from Isheri Olowora passing through River Valley Estate to link the expressway. Inward lagos have been diverted to pass through Babcock College, opposite Enyo filling station to link the expressway and drive into Lagos.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has requested that President Bola Tinubu amend the recently passed Students Loans Act to grants for indigent students.
ASUU National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke said this on Channels Television’s program which was monitored by BizWatch Nigeria.
Osodeke said, “This would have been better if we are giving it to those set of students who are very poor, it should be called a grant, not a loan.
“It should be called a grant since it is coming from the Federation Account and not that (after) these people have access it and when they are graduating, they have heavy loads behind them and within two years, if they don’t pay, they go to jail.
“That’s why we’re talking about collective bargaining, you have views from all the sides.”
The loan, according to the ASUU President, is impractical. He stated that the debt is “unsustainable.”
Osodeke said, “The idea of student loan came in 1972 and it was in a bank established. People who took loans never paid, you can go and investigate. In 1994, 1993, the military enacted Decree 50 also set up a Students’ Loan Board.
“The National Assembly domesticated it in 2004 and within a year, it went off. The money disappeared. We want to see how this one will be different.”
According to him, over one million students attend Nigerian public universities, and the loan cannot sufficiently cover their tuition.
The loan terms, according to the ASUU President, are “not practicable,” and more than 90% of students will not meet the “stringent requirements” to receive and repay the loan.
He said, “We, as a union also did research of countries all over the world, of people who have benefited from this loan, they were committing suicide. Recently, (President Joe) Biden is trying to pay back the bank loans of some who borrowed in the US.
“It is better to look for alternative means of funding education than to encumbering students whose parents earn N30,000 a month with a loan.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said the nation spends about $500 billion (N300 billion) annually on the importation of dairy products, reiterating the need for the country to refocus on agriculture and production to drive economic growth and development.
The governor said this when he received a team from Heifer International, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, in Benin City.
He noted that his government is prioritizing agricultural production, sustaining investment in the sector to boost the state’s economy, tackle food insecurity and create wealth for citizens.
According to him, “We have a small State of about five million people, 70 percent of the people are under the age of 35 years, and need to make them know and understand that we don’t have the dollars to import food anymore as Nigeria spends about half a billion US dollars importing dairy products.
“Food and food security is very huge, particularly protein sufficiency for the mass of our people, especially children. We are a rich country with a rich and huge population and at some point in our history, we turned from agricultural production as we found crude oil and felt we have enough petrol, naira, and dollars to keep ourselves going forgetting that sometimes in our life we need to produce what we will eat.
“We became poor by exporting all we needed including food and food items. We spend billions of naira and dollars annually on the foods we can produce on our own.”
He continued: “My administration thrives on partnership. As a government, we see our role as one that enables things to happen. As enablers, we see our role as being able to mobilize resources, particularly human capacity, and knowledge, and direct them into areas of priority as we see.
“Interestingly, we have partners and we try to start something in the area of agriculture but have some difficulties and are making efforts to tackle them. We have gotten a commitment from our partners to make an investment in a modern farm from where we will propagate day-old chicks and get them into the market.
“It’s a long way to go and a lot of work but we are glad with the support and technology from the front end and understand that we need to go back the value chain and think of how to produce the grains, vitamins, feeds and all needed to grow the poultry business.”
Reeling from the gains of the government’s investment in agriculture, the governor said, “Last year, we put out 60,000 hectares of new farmland for estate farmers in oil palm which is under cultivation. For us, the lessons out there are to work with our partners to build the institution to train human capacity, extension workers, and farmers to help us understand what is going on, support the farmers and monitor what they are doing to guarantee their yield and help them make money and sustain their business.
“As a government, we are making the investment within the government, shaping our understanding and moving from an era in which government used to invest to the one where the government enables investment. It’s not an easy transition but as a government, we are continuing to make those investments and maintain the focus.
“Our relationship with Heifer International is the one we cherish. 79 years of existence and knowledge is not a small feat to achieve and we are excited you are here to see what we are doing and will do our best to utilize this opportunity of our partnership.”
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Hilary Haddigan, while commending the government’s commitment to ensuring food security said, “We represent over 500 partners and donors that support our work. Our vision is to end poverty and care for the Earth while our mission is to support 10 million smallholder farmers.
“We have met with farmers in the State who are preparing to receive poultry products. We thank you for bringing happiness to the lives of smallholder farmers here in Edo State and would like to partner with your administration.”

I make it bold to say that the most important day in a person’s life is his or her birthday! It is an important day when one’s personal flight touches down, marking the beginning of your journey on earth. However, some people choose not to celebrate their special day. Worse still, some do not even commit their birth dates to memory.
I used to belong in the former category! I never celebrated a birthday, not because of lack; I just didn’t care until I turned 40 years old. I can’t even claim that I set out intentionally to mark it. My wife organised a surprise parlour party in connivance with my friends.
My plan for my two-score birthday was very simple; to take a break from the hustle and grind, get some sleep, and reflect afterwards. I switched off my Nokia so no one could reach me. But my wife had a different plan, unbeknownst to me. She came to rouse me around 4 p.m. and pleaded that I should take my bath before coming to eat something in the dining room. You can’t imagine my shock when my friends started singing, “Happy birthday to you!” upon sighting me. It was a successful coup, and it tickled me a great deal. I still remember it fondly. I will be eternally grateful for her kindness and generosity.
Weddings are memorable occasions; one can hardly forget the joy he or she felt when they tied the nuptial knot. People will shower new couples with love and gifts. Yoruba weddings are arguably the most fun, with colourful Aso Ebi accompanied by lots to eat, drink, dance, and takeaway. However, only a few people remember their wedding anniversary the following year. It is not that people don’t care; the problem is that they need to be prompted. Couples can even decide to go their separate ways!
When you buy a property, a car, or even acquire a degree or promotion, people won’t wish you a happy anniversary the following year. It is a one-time activity, not like recurring birthdays. However, LinkedIn is the only social media app I know that remembers work anniversaries.
Some families mark the memorials of their loved ones on different scales. It is a cultural or status thing for Africans to celebrate the memorials of great personalities, sometimes with fanfare. However, it is not the same thing as marking a birthday because the celebrant is not alive to witness it.
During baby christenings and early birthdays, one is too young to comprehend what is going on. However, pictures and videos will convey the message much later.
It is important to commemorate and celebrate your momentous day as you grow in strength and stature. Your birthday is a reminder that you are alive, to show gratitude to the giver of life for His benevolence, and to enjoy yourself more than on a usual day. Birthdays bring you joy because people shower you with attention, love, fun, and gifts.
Men and women are different in the ways they celebrate their birthdays. A woman usually celebrates the entire week leading up to her birthday. She considers what to shop for, where to go, what hairstyle and outfit to wear, and which friend to celebrate with. But men usually do the opposite. A man wants to enjoy it with his friends without pomp.
Nowadays, the easiest way to mark a birthday is to go for photoshoots. It’s no wonder the photography business is booming. Just splash the pictures on your social media timelines during your day. People and well-wishers often celebrate birthdays on WhatsApp statuses. However, phone calls are the best way to celebrate with people; nothing beats hearing people’s best wishes; it is therapeutic.
I like marking my birthdays in small ways; I don’t like crowded things. These days, when people call or send me texts to wish me a happy birthday, I get emotional and teary-eyed with happiness. I often hear from people I haven’t spoken to or seen in years. In return for their kindness, I appreciate and show them gratitude for their affection and best wishes.
Facebook is one of the social media apps that sends birthday notifications if the user enables it; I like the medium for that. I am used to checking the app every morning, whenever I can, to know whose birthday is next. Outlook also sends birthday notifications the night before your contact’s birthday.
It is important to celebrate life. A birthday signifies a beginning and the joy of life. They are a clever way to make happy memories, reflect, and give us optimism for the future.
If it’s your birthday today, happy birthday!

As one of the winners of the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award, the Olam Agri Seeds for the Future Initiative was launched as Olam Agri in Nigeria’s wheat value-chain social sustainability investment vehicle in 2021 and is driven by five key levers, which are supporting farmers and farming communities, enabling broader education & skill development for young people, empowering women (farmers & bakers), promoting health & nutrition, and reducing carbon emissions in business operations.
In 2022, the initiative announced an impressive first-year result of its multi-year research, seed trial and multiplication effort. A 41-year-old manager of SEAP Micro-Finance Bank, Sola Ogungbe has reportedly committed suicide in his Iseyin home in Oyo State.
Ogungbe was said to have given loan facilities to some customers who defaulted in repayment.
A staff was said to have called Ogungbe’s wife on Wednesday afternoon because the former manager had not been reporting at work over the loan default crisis.
On getting home to report the call to her husband, the wife met his corpse.
A close friend of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity, said the deceased made a mistake by taking his life instead of discussing the issue with his friends.
He said: “The issue of suicide is becoming alarming, Sola made a great mistake by taking his own life because of debt, if he had shared this issue with his friends, maybe somebody would have come to his aid.
”Everyone is going through one thing or the other but our survival is anchored upon a communal living and friendship, tell people about your issues, you don’t even know who can help you.”
The body of the deceased has been taken to his hometown in Omu- Aran, Kwara State for burial.
Fatherhood encompasses more than just providing for a family; it involves imparting valuable life lessons to the next generation. One crucial area where fathers can have a lasting impact is in teaching their children about finance management. By instilling financial literacy and responsibility from a young age, fathers can equip their children with skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Explore the seven essential finance management lessons that fathers should teach their children;
The Importance of Saving
Teaching children the value of saving money is a fundamental lesson in finance management. Fathers can encourage their children to set aside a portion of their earnings or allowances regularly. By emphasizing the long-term benefits of saving, fathers can cultivate a habit of financial discipline early on.
Differentiating Between Needs and Wants
Helping children differentiate between needs and wants is crucial for developing smart spending habits. Fathers can guide their children to prioritize essential expenses while being mindful of unnecessary expenditures. This lesson teaches children to make thoughtful financial decisions and avoid impulsive buying.
Budgeting Skills
Teaching children how to create and follow a budget is an invaluable skill. Fathers can explain the concept of budgeting, assist their children in setting financial goals, and show them how to allocate funds for various expenses. This lesson will empower children to manage their finances effectively and avoid unnecessary debt.
Delayed Gratification
Fathers can teach their children about delayed gratification by encouraging them to save up for something they desire rather than seeking instant gratification through impulsive purchases. By instilling patience and discipline, fathers can help their children understand the long-term rewards of delayed gratification.
The Power of Investing
Introducing children to the concept of investing can foster a mindset of wealth creation. Fathers can explain simple investment strategies, such as saving in a high-interest savings account or investing in low-risk assets. Teaching children about the potential for growth through investments encourages them to think long-term and make informed financial decisions.
Responsible Credit Card Usage
As children grow older, fathers should educate them about responsible credit card usage. Explaining the importance of paying credit card bills on time, understanding interest rates, and avoiding unnecessary debt empowers children to use credit responsibly and maintain a healthy financial profile.
Giving Back and Philanthropy
Fathers should emphasize the significance of giving back to society and practicing philanthropy. Teaching children about charitable donations and the joy of helping others instills a sense of gratitude and empathy. It also highlights the importance of managing finances not only for personal gain but also for the betterment of the community.
Upshot
Fathers have a unique opportunity to shape their children’s financial futures by imparting essential finance management lessons. By teaching the importance of saving, differentiating between needs and wants, budgeting, delayed gratification, investing, responsible credit card usage, and giving back, fathers equip their children with lifelong skills and values. These lessons lay a solid foundation for financial independence, security, and responsible decision-making. As fathers take on the role of financial mentors, they contribute to building a generation of financially literate and empowered individuals.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced a ‘Trust Visa’ to encourage international investment in Nigeria.
The NIS, led by acting comptroller general Carol Wura-Ola Adepoju, launched the ‘Trust Visa,’ a new initiative to protect the interests of foreign investors entering the nation for business objectives.
According to Adepoju, the fundamental goal of this campaign is to prevent unscrupulous individuals acting as business people from taking advantage of international investors looking for partnerships with Nigerians.
The trust visa scheme also provides foreign investors involved in Nigerian partnerships with assurances of genuineness.
During her visit to Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), where the Visa-On-Arrival (VOA) lounge was inaugurated, she emphasized the importance of this effort in drawing more foreign direct investments to Nigeria.
Adepoju said “By implementing the trust visa system, the NIS aims to foster a secure and conducive environment for foreign investors, ensuring their confidence in engaging in business partnerships within Nigeria.”
“Because of the prevalence of international crime, especially the ones that are done online, when you have a lot of fictitious business offers, but some of them are afraid, they do not know the calibre of the people they are dealing with, you know sometimes you will need partners here.
“When investors obtain the necessary thrust visa, we will work closely with agencies such as the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security organisations responsible for safeguarding the country.
“If you are an investor seeking to partner with someone in Nigeria, we will provide you with a dossier and a security report on that person. This will enable us to determine their trustworthiness, and once we confirm their credibility, we assure you that your investment in partnership with them will be successful.”
The VOA facility, according to the acting CGIS, aims to ease the bureaucratic processes associated with getting a business visa. The number of international investors eager to come and invest in Nigeria is projected to rise as these procedures are simplified.
This enhanced user experience raises the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination and stimulates more foreign direct investment.
She said: “According to our records, a significant number of VOA visas were issued at the MMIA in 2022, totaling 55,644. Considering that these individuals are high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), this figure holds significant economic importance.
“The renovation and expansion of the VOA lounges speak to the commitment of the Service and the Nation to welcoming High Business Network Investors willing to come for business purposes. Lagos being a centre of excellence requires a befitting reception for this calibre of investors”.
“By providing travellers with the convenience of having their visa processed in a comfortable space and in a timely manner upon arrival, the NIS is showing its commitment to ease of doing business and hostmanship, the art of making people welcome, which has become our brand signature”.
