Rafael Nadal clinched a record ninth title at the Monte Carlo Masters after a 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 victory over Frenchman Gael Monfils, on Sunday, April 17 at Court Ranier III, Monaco.
The Spaniard reclaimed the title that he won at the Monte-Carlo Country Club from 2005-2012, His 46 match winning streak in Monte-Carlo was finally ended in the 2013 final by Novak Djokovic.
Incidentally, the win also takes Nadal on the same level with Novak Djokovic with 28 trophies at the Masters 1000 level.
Speaking after the game, an elated Nadal who needed nearly three hours to defeat Monfils said: “It’s great to win a Masters title again. “I had a tough season last years but I’ve had better preparation this year, even with a tough start to the season. “I hope this week will help me a lot.” Nadal now owns 68 titles and will carry on in the run-up to the French Open with renewed confidence. On his part, Monfils can take small consolation after winning his first-ever set against Nadal on clay.
