Wide gaps between available spaces and the number of students seeking higher education in the country were brought to the fore yet again recently, with the revelation that the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) could only admit 4,500 out of 110, 000 applicants.
According to the Rector, Mrs. Margaret Ladipo, who spoke at the institution’s matriculation ceremony held recently, the college could only admit 4500 new students for the National Diploma (ND) and 3000 for the Higher National Diploma (HND) prgrammes respectively.
While complying with the Federal Government’s directive to improve access to education, she said the college has also embarked on a series of initiatives to improve its carrying capacity, through the construction of more structures that would provide additional sitting space for students.
She said projects such as a lecture auditorium with a sitting capacity of 1300 through a Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) special intervention, would guarantee additional sitting spaces; while a 500 capacity lecture theatre project is being upgraded to a 3-storey building.
