The ministry of Defence has been given a 14 day ultimatum by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria(ASCSN) to pay allowances of its members, including outstanding arrears owed since 2011.
In a statement released in Lagos, General-Secretary of the union, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, said that his union would not hesitate to paralyze activities at the ministry if it fails to meet their demands. The union wondered why an institution which prides itself as an epitome of discipline, equity, and fairness will oppress and dehumanize its civilian workers by denying them their entitlements.
“It is necessary to emphasis that if within this period (14 days), the meeting is not called, the national leadership of the union would not be held responsible for the workers action,” he said.
Lawal noted that the issues in dispute include “non-payment of promotion arrears since 2011, non-placement of staff after their promotion, short-payment/non-payment of salary arrears and non-payment of hanging salaries”.
