UCL: Chelsea survive PSG || 10-man Bayern held by Shakhtar

The UEFA Champions League resumed tonight with Matches in the second round, which saw Chelsea hold Paris Saint Germain to a 1-1 draw, while German champions, Bayern Munich left Shakhtar Donetsk with a point after a goalless draw.

A first-half away goal by Branislav Ivanovic and some fine goalkeeping by Thibaut Courtois put Chelsea in command of their Champions League last-16 tie. Ivanovic headed in on 36 minutes after Gary Cahill had helped the ball into his path to give Chelsea the lead from their first and only chance of the evening at the Parc des Princes.

PSG drew level nine minutes into the second half, after Edison Cavani was left completely unmarked to head home his 17th goal of the season – his sixth in the Champions League – from a Matuidi left-wing cross.

Chelsea, who won last year’s quarter-final with PSG on away goals, scored with their only chance while the hosts had several opportunities to take a lead into the second leg through Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The return will be played at Stamford Bridge on March 11.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw by Shakhtar Donetsk with the German side reduced to 10 men following the second-half sending off of Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, who was making his 100th Champions League appearance, was dismissed with 25 minutes remaining following a second booking from Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco.

Champions League round of 16 matches that will be decided today;
FC Basel vs PMPorto
Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid
