Trade unions Tell Northern Governors: Release Our Entitlements

The National Union of Textiles, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria and workers of the New Nigeria Newspapers yesterday brought their cases before northern governors, appealing to them to settle the entitlements of their workers without further delay.

While the New Nigeria Workers went on a peaceful demonstration in front of the General Hassan Usman Katsina House, venue of the Northern State Governors Forum meeting, the textile workers union wrote a three-page memo to the governors appealing for the payment of the entitlement of their members.

In a letter entitled “Save the lives of KTL workers; pay their entitlements without further delay,” and signed by the General Secretary, Issa Aremu, the textile workers drew attention of the governors to a 2005 judgement against which the court asked the governors to settle the workers N687 million entitlement. He noted that rather than pay the workers, the 19 northern states have remained insensitive to their predicament in spite of repeated appeals and protests by the union.
