President Jonathan Launches Nationwide Rural Solar Electrification

President Goodluck Jonathan has flagged off a nationwide solar-powered off-grid rural electrification programme in Abuja yesterday.

Formally flagging off of the Light-up Rural Nigeria project nationwide, President Jonathan said, “It is significant as my first commissioning in this centenary year and exciting that we are starting the year by giving light to our rural people.”

Jonathan who noted that over 1600 households would be fully connected to solar power in this first phase of OLRN in three communities in Abuja assured that, “It is however not an alternative to grid connection in all our communities which we hope will be achieved in the near future.”

In his address the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo said, “It is conceived as a fast-track mechanism to deliver electricity to thousands of Rural Communities in Nigeria that are not yet connected to the national electricity grid and also to those communities so far flung from the grid.”
