Onitsha Newspapers Distributors Petitions Gov Over Harassment

Members of the Onitsha Newspaper Distribution Directors Association (ONNDA) have petitioned the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, over incessant harassments by task force operating under Onitsha North/South Local Government Council, Ministries of Transport and Environment and others.

In a petition signed by its Chairman, Jude Oguzie and other executives, the group, which is under the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) lamented that the task force has been making life unbearable to its members on the pretext that they are staying at unapproved areas.

In a statement issued to the Governor, the association said, “Despite the fact that we have been experiencing lots of destruction of our goods and property worth several millions of naira from the hands of the local government officials, mostly from Onitsha and South local governments all these while, we still painstakingly accommodate their overzealousness just in our efforts to remain law abiding citizens of the state. But the over compensate attacks on our members by these local government officials in recent times calls for great concern.”

The association also noted that on Thursday, May 30, 2013, during morning hours, some sets of men wearing ASTA vest from Ministry of Works Onitsha, invaded its stands at Upper Iweka area and packed all daily newspaper, monthly and weekly magazines including personal belongings and threw them into fire.
