There was pandemonium in Orile axis of Lagos on Monday, after some hoodlums clashed, leaving at least one dead and many others injured. Although the immediate cause of the free-for-all could not be ascertained, source said that the violence was due to a supremacy battle between two factions from Memudu and Savage streets.
It was learnt that the hoodlums also used the confusion caused by the clash to rob innocent residents. They also vandalized vehicles parked on the roadside. From accounts, the man who was killed was stabbed several times. All attempts to ascertain his identity proved abortive as of press time.
When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to our correspondent. Braide said five people had been arrested but the police had yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased.
She said, “Around 9:45pm, some groups of hoodlums engaged in a supremacy battle in Coker area of Orile. Policemen rushed to the scene and on arrival, it was observed that the streets were littered with stones while all the parked vehicles were vandalized. “On sighting the police, the hoodlums took to their heels. The corpse of a man of about 27 years, suspected to have participated in the mayhem, was seen in a pool of blood with several cuts.
“Five male suspects were arrested while some cutlasses and a locally made shot gun were recovered. Some of the injured persons were later referred to hospitals and the corpse deposited at the Yaba General Hospital mortuary for autopsy. Normalcy has since returned while policemen are still patrolling the area. Effort is being made to arrest other fleeing hoodlums.”
