The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria, RATTAWU, yesterday condemned Monday’s attack on reporters of the Broadcasting Corporation of Ekiti State at the Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, secretariat, Ado Ekiti.
In a statement, Ekiti State NUJ chairman, Laolu Omosilade, lamented that journalists are at the receiving end of such precarious situations but should be accorded their right of place in political situations.
In his words, “NUJ would not take it lightly with any political party, association or anyone who humiliates journalists either by maiming, battering or assaulting in the course of carrying out their legitimate duties of gathering news for the benefit of the general masses which we represent.”
The reporters who had gone to the party secretariat following the attempt to raze the edifice by some hoodlums were attacked and their audio-visual camera destroyed.
RATTAWU state chairman, Comrade Banji Adelusi, also, in a statement, warned all political parties to promote politics of responsibility and allow the precepts of true democracy to guide their conducts.
