The Nigerian Medical Association has condemned incessant strikes embarked upon by medical and health workers in the country.
In a communique issued by the association after the National Health Summit held in Asaba, Delta State, the National President of the association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, said medical associations must explore all aspects of dialogue before embarking on any industrial action.
He also warned that the national body would henceforth sanction any branch that did not conform to this directive. It stated, “The NMA took a critical look at the indiscriminate and incessant resort to strike by medical and health workers, and resolved that henceforth, no affiliate group or branch of NMA shall embark on any strike without clear approval from the national body of NMA.
“It would only be considered after exploring all options at constructive dialogue. We must conform to extant laws and the provisions of the code of medical ethics. Any violation of the foregoing shall be met with appropriate sanctions by the association.”
