Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shunned all meetings of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) in Geneva, Switzerland. It was gathered that the move followed the controversy surrounding the appointment of Owei Lakemfa, former NLC scribe, as secretary of the regional organization.
OATUU is one of the regional organizations of the African trade union movement. The Organisation is a coalition of trade union movements in various African countries and has its headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
It was learnt that leaders of the NLC were neither present nor represented during the plenary sittings of OATUU at the ongoing 102nd session of International Labour Conference (ILC). It was gathered that the decision to boycott all OATUU meeting, followed the way and manner in which Owei was selected as spokesperson for the regional organization in December 2012 without the knowledge and support of the NLC.
