Former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA , Patrick Akpobolokemi, has stated that the agency generated about N5.1trillion during his tenure.
According to him, the agency generated the said amount from the three per cent freight rate, contrary to claims that he looted the agency’s treasury while there.
Akpobolokemi said: “The agency recorded the highest collections of $335.7 million and $287.3million in 2014 and 2013 respectively.
“The promotional programmes of the Agency are geared toward meeting the socio economic aspiration of the country by harnessing optimally, the economic potential of the maritime sector.
“The agency’s regulatory policy and programmes were vigorously implemented to foster effective maritime regulatory environment in Nigeria. “The key drive is to ensure that Nigerian maritime is safe and secure for viral maritime economic activities to thrive in line with IMO core values.
“The agency’s programmes in this aspect were also geared to enthrone the regime of fair practice, standardization of service,” he added. He maintained that NIMASA management has in the last four years, pursued the two main objectives for which the agency was established through the initiation and vigorous implementation of the various programmes/project.
He explained that the policy and programme of the agency while he was in office was envisioned to develop indigenous shipping capacity in both human and infrastructure, adding that such capacity would enable Nigerians to participate meaningfully in the economic activities offered by the Nigerian maritime sector.
