Nigeria To Generate N200bn From Maize Production

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said that with the current Agricultural Transformation Agenda, it is expected that maize will add N200 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said that the government has commissioned 100,000 metric tons silos at strategic places in the country for maize and other grains.

He disclosed this  in Abuja during a  a book launch on ‘The Revolutionary Trend of Maize in Nigeria,’ written by Professor Joseph Fajemisin.

“Production figure show a steady increase in maize production from 7.4 million metric tons in 2009 to the current 10.3 million metric tons in 2013. Production figure for 2014 is estimated at over 12 million metric tons, about 14 million if you include quantity consumed as green maize,” the minister said.
