Journalists Call for Arrest of Colleague’s Attackers

On Monday, June 1, journalists based in Nasarawa State had a meeting to call for the arrest and prosecution of those behind last Friday’s violent attack on their colleague and reporter of Daily Trust newspapers, Hir Joseph, by youths suspected to be thugs loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) said that the attack on their colleague in the presence of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura who was  being sworn in for a second term in office in Lafia was unwarranted.
Titled “Assault By Touts On Hir Joseph, Daily Trust correspondent,” and signed by the chapel chairman and secretary, Suleiman Abubakar, and Isaac Ukpoju, a communiqué from the journalists said the attackers wore T-Shirts branded with TA’Al, a popular campaign nickname of Tanko Al-Makura.

The group also alleged that there had been threats to the lives of other journalists from the same thugs since that incident. The statement called for responsive action from the state government and the APC, just as it urged security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those involved.
