Last night, fire gutted the pipelines near the Atlas Cove Depot in Lagos belonging to the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
It was gathered that the fire incident, which lasted for several hours, was caused by vandals who tapped into the pipelines to scoop fuel.
According to sources within the area, the vandals went with canoe to tap into the pipelines in Ilado area of Lagos when they caught fire, resulting in thick smoke, which was seen for several hours.
Spokesman of the NNPC, Ohi Alegbe, confirmed the incident , adding that officials of the company were already at the scene to put out the fire.
He further stated that the incident would not cause fuel scarcity as the pipeline was shutdown immediately the fire was spotted.
