Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League after Dejan Lovren missed the decisive penalty in a shoot-out.
The Reds had come into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage which they gained at Anfield but a stunning strike from substitute Tolgay Arslan in the 72nd minute cancelled out the lead Brendan Rodgers’side had, making the aggregate score 1-1 and forcing extra time before penalties.
The Turkish side won the 5-4 on penalties after a gruelling encounter finished 1-1 on aggregate, Croatian defender Lovren miscued from 12 yards to send Besiktas through. He sent his spot kick fly high and wide after Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Joe Allen all scored their kicks.
It was the first time Liverpool had ever lost a shoot-out in Europe and only their third loss in 15 attempts in their entire history.
It will be recalled that in 2005, the Reds had their famous Champions League success at the same Stadium, when they came from 3-0 down against AC Milan in the final,to win the competition.
