The delay in fertilizer supply has caused farmers in Zaria, Kaduna State to cultivate crops that do not require the application of chemical fertilizers.
Farmers who spoke with reporters said they shifted attention from cultivating fertilizer-inclined crops to those that require little or no fertilizer.
One of the farmers, Musa Dogara said he did not cultivate maize in the last two years except for personal consumption due to non-availability of fertilizers, adding that he, instead, shifted to soya-beans, groundnuts and guinea-corn.
“Remember, the negative consequences of the delay would not only affect farmers, but the entire nation.
“We are into this farming business not only to feed ourselves but the country at large. However, in spite of our efforts, fertilizers are not forthcoming,’’ he said.
