Agriculture: FG Targets 10Million Farmers in 2013 GES Scheme

While targeting 10 million farmers in the 2013 Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme, the Federal Government plans to distribute one million tonnes of fertiliser to the farmers this year.

, The Director of Fertiliser, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Akingbolawa Osho, says the GES scheme is a Federal Government initiative under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda aimed at subsidising the cost of major agricultural inputs such as fertiliser and seeds.

According to him, the seed companies at the inception of the scheme, did not have enough funding to enable them to produce sufficient seeds, a situation which prompted the government to support them in addressing the challenge.

Osho, however, noted that the scheme was facing some challenges but said the Federal Government was working hard to address them.
