Adesina Disagrees With GFFA on Agro-Chemical Farming

Agriculture Ministers across 65 countries, at the Global Forum for Food Agriculture (GFFA) emphasised that sustainable agriculture must use natural resources, in particular, soil and water, in a manner which preserves them for future generations.

However, in a sharp disagreement, the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said inorganic fertilizers, if well applied, are safe for usage as he cautioned that illicit or excessive use or agro-chemical inputs is dangerous to soil fertility.

Adesina, who on behalf of the federal government, signed a bilateral cooperation agreement for agricultural development with  the Israeli government on Friday in Abuja, stated that the plant does not care how it get its nutrients.

He said it was safe for plants to get its nutrients from both organic and inorganic sources.

The minister explained that there was nothing wrong with the use of agro-chemicals, provided the essential soil organic matter required to be combined with inorganic inputs are present in the soil.

He said his ministry was canvassing for an integrated soil nutrients management in which both inorganic and organic inputs would be combined.
