Fight Against HIV/AIDS : FG To Spend N8bn In Taraba, Abia

As part of efforts to successfully fight the scourge of HIV/AIDS in the country, the federal government has released N8 billion for Taraba and Abia states through the National Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS SURE-P implementation programme.

This was disclosed recently by NACA Director General Prof John Idoko, in Jalingo at a stakeholders’ meeting during which an international partner, fhi360, which has been implementing HIV/AIDS programmes in Taraba, formally handed over to the state government.

He explained that the funds were aimed at providing Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) for about 50,000 eligible adults and children as well as Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMCT) care for 10,000 pregnant women in the two states, among others.

Idoko urged Taraba government and relevant stakeholders that would be involved in the implementation of HIV/AIDS programme under the new arrangement to do their best to ensure it succeeds.

Earlier, Deputy Country Director of fhi360, Dr Robert Chiegel said it has provided treatment, care and support for over 270,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS in the state since it began its operations in Taraba over ten years ago. He expressed assurance that HIV programme implementation would not fail following the transition from the international partner to government.
